There are mini 6 pin power ports on the motherboard that can handle 120W. Something like a RX 570 (180W) is low power enough to not require the Pixlas mod. The GPU upgrade will let you use the latest macOS versions (Metal GPU requirement). Upgrading the startup disk is going to be the most dramatic upgrade and one of the easiest to do. Upgrade both CPUs to the x5680 or x5690 ($65 or $108 each refurbished) Replace 5770 with a newer AMD GPU (example: RX 570 $100) Upgrade startup disk to a SSD ($80 - $200) Im pretty flexible on budget if the community thinks this is worth upgrading. currently the computer runs slow enough that I don't really want to do any of those things on this desktop. My goals are to be able to use garageband, watch movies, maybe a little gaming (I know that is laughable, but I don't have a windows desktop). I am willing and happy to learn but I don't haver a ton of free time. The peak of my computer savviness was taking CCNA classes back in 2003. I am trying to decide if I should try to upgrade this computer or not and would appreciate any advice/guidance. However, when I started looking into the Pixlas mod, I got discouraged. I watched some videos on youtube about upgrading these ( ) and I was motivated. I am currently running High Sierra and can not upgrade to Mojave without a new metal supported video card (if I am understanding that correctly).
